What is Private International Law

Private International Law, also known as choice of law, is essentially the management of the intersection of two national legal systems.  In the civil law tradition legal topics like contracts and torts are known as private law, hence the name.  So if the US handles a contract issue in one way and the Germans handle it another way which law do you choose?  In the PIL arena many countries have entered into bilateral and multilateral agreements designed to smooth over the bumps created by the differences between legal systems.
